We’ve all been there. You walk into a winery, and suddenly it feels like you need a PhD in soil science just to order a drink. There are long menus, talk of "leather notes" and "terroir," and a lot of swirling. At Ve Oh Lay Acres, we think wine should be fun, not a test.

If you’re looking to explore the incredible world of South Okanagan wine without the stuffy atmosphere, wine flights are your new best friend. They are the perfect way to sample a variety of our award-winning bottles without committing to a full glass right away.

Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned sipper, here is everything you need to know about tasting like a pro, while keeping it totally casual.

What Exactly is a Wine Flight?

Think of a wine flight as a "taster tray." Instead of one full glass of wine, you get a selection of smaller pours (usually 1 to 3 ounces each). This allows you to compare different varietals side-by-side.

At our Summerland winery, we love flights because they tell a story. You can taste the difference between a crisp white and a bold red, or explore how different grapes thrive in the South Okanagan sun. It’s a low-pressure way to find your "soulmate" wine.

Why Flights are Perfect for Beginners

We understand that choosing a bottle can be intimidating. That’s why we’ve designed our casual winery experience to be as welcoming as possible.

  • No Commitment: Not sure if you like Rosé? A flight lets you try it without buying the whole bottle.
  • Variety is Key: You get to experience the range of our cellar in one sitting.
  • Learning by Doing: The best way to learn what you like is simply to taste more things!
  • Social Fun: Flights are made for sharing. Grab a flight, some tacos, and chat about what you’re tasting with your friends.

The "5 S’s" of Professional Tasting (The Casual Version)

You don’t need to be a sommelier to appreciate a good pour. When your flight arrives at your table, use these five simple steps to get the most out of every drop.

1. See

Hold your glass up to the light. Look at the color. Is the white wine pale and clear, or more of a golden straw color? Is the red a light ruby or a deep, dark purple? The color can often give you a hint about how heavy or light the wine will feel in your mouth.

2. Swirl

Don’t worry about looking fancy, swirling actually serves a purpose! It aerates the wine, releasing all those delicious aromas. Pro tip: Keep the base of the glass on the table and move it in small circles. It’s way easier and prevents spills!

3. Smell

Don’t be shy, get your nose in there! Take a short, quick sniff. Do you smell fruit? Flowers? Maybe something earthy? There are no wrong answers. If it smells like "summer in a glass" to you, then that’s exactly what it is.

4. Sip

Take a small sip and let it coat your whole tongue. Notice the "body" of the wine. Does it feel light like water, or a bit heavier like cream? Notice if it’s tart and mouth-watering or if it has a dry, grippy feeling (those are the tannins!).

5. Savor

This is the best part. After you swallow, how long does the flavor stay with you? Most importantly, ask yourself: Do I like this? At the end of the day, that is the only metric that matters.

Pairing Your Flight with Tacos & Tapas

Wine is great on its own, but it’s even better with food. Our onsite kitchen specializes in gourmet street tacos and small bites that are designed to be shared.

When you’re working through a flight, we recommend pairing:

  • Crisp Whites & Rosé: Perfect with our fresh, lime-heavy fish or chicken tacos.
  • Bold Reds: These stand up beautifully to our richer, savory tapas and beef options.
  • Wine Slushies: If you’re feeling adventurous, try a side-by-side of our famous wine slushies with a spicy taco for the ultimate summer contrast.

We also sell Farm Fresh Honey, which makes for a unique pairing with some of our lighter, floral wines. You can learn more about our bees and honey on our blog.

The Ve Oh Lay Experience

We aren’t your typical, quiet-as-a-library tasting room. We are all about the casual winery experience. You’ll find people laughing on our wooden swing benches, kids playing, and a vibe that feels like a backyard party.

We also offer Wine on Tap, which ensures every pour in your flight is as fresh as the moment it left the barrel. It’s a more sustainable and casual way to serve, and it fits our mission of keeping things approachable.
